Academy Award winner Angelina Jolie has opened up to PEOPLE about her daughter’s integral role during the production process of ‘The Outsiders’ Broadway musical.
While Jolie is the producer of the musical adaptation, she acknowledges that her 15-year-old daughter, Vivienne, is the true theater enthusiast in their family.
At the premiere of the Broadway show on April 11, Jolie disclosed that Vivienne was heavily involved in the production. When asked about the biggest theater enthusiast in their family, Jolie quickly pointed to her daughter. “Viv. Definitely Viv,” she affirmed, with the musical’s book and score creator, Justin Levine, echoing her sentiments.
According to Jolie, Vivienne takes her role seriously, often correcting her mother and reminding her of tasks that need attention. Jolie humorously refers to her daughter as “a really tough assistant,” emphasizing Vivienne’s dedication to her responsibilities.
Vivienne accompanied her mother to the premiere, where they posed together on the red carpet alongside the cast of the show.
The new Broadway production is an adaptation of S.E. Hinton’s beloved novel from 1967. Previously brought to the screen by director Francis Ford Coppola and screenwriter Kathleen Rowell in 1983, the story follows the Curtis brothers and their friends in Tulsa, Oklahoma, during the 1960s.
Jolie expressed her strong connection to the material and the creative team behind the musical, describing it as a privilege to be part of the process. She highlighted the emotional impact of the show, particularly on young audiences.
The producer commended the dedication and talent of the cast, describing them as brilliant singers, dancers, and actors who worked tirelessly to bring the production to life.
After a month of previews, ‘The Outsiders’ officially opened on Thursday, April 11, marking a milestone for Jolie and her team.
